How we got our name

Dr. Thomas Boyce, an emeritus professor of pediatrics and psychiatry cared for children who appeared to be unfazed by the changes in their environment as well as those who appeared to be very sensitive to their surroundings. Over time, he began to liken these two groups of children to dandelions and orchids, two quite distinct, yet beautiful flowers. According to Boyce, who has spent over 40 years researching the human stress response - children often are like dandelions, resilient and able to handle stress and hardship in their life. However, some children are "orchids” - more sensitive and biologically reactive to their environment, making it more challenging for them to handle stressful situations.
